We have to “Maslow before we can Bloom”- which is to say that we must meet students’ basic and safety needs before we can expect the higher-order thinking skills associated with learning. By understanding the impact of these basic needs- and the challenge to those needs experienced by many of our students as a result of COVID, we recognize that addressing learning loss is much more than just covering the curriculum that was missed.
